If you’re anything like me, I’ll bet you love planning. I’m at my best when there’s a big event coming up, that I get to design in as much detail as possible! Planning my wedding was one of the most fun (if stressful) things I’ve ever done. Planning birthday parties, dates, and special events is my jam.
It goes to follow that one of my favorite parts of being a doula is helping clients create their birth plans. Helping a mama-to-be distill her wishes and dreams for birth down into a simple, easy-to-understand roadmap is seriously awesome. Obviously birth unfolds in unpredictable ways, but at least knowing your priorities and having an outline to follow, can create a sense of peace and security as you prepare. Most moms have at least heard of a birth plan.
But have you heard of a postpartum plan?
What will happen after your baby is here?
What do you want to happen?
Guess what? You can plan your Postpartum, too! And I can help!
To get started, picture what your ideal postpartum would look like.
Where are you: In your room, the baby’s nursery, somewhere else?
Who is there: You and your baby, obviously, but what other support do you have? Your husband? Your parents? A postpartum doula? Trusted friends?
What types of physical support might you like: Sitz baths? Steams? Warming foods? Belly binding? Care for older siblings?
How about emotional support: Do you have a church you can reach out to? Friends or family that are great listeners? A counselor or therapist?
How do you plan to feed your baby? Breastfeeding? Formula feeding? Both? Do you have a resource for lactation support if you plan to breastfeed? Do you know what options are available?
These are just a few ideas of things you can consider when planning your time right after the birth of your baby.
Now is the time to imagine your perfect postpartum!
What does yours look like?
Blessings, Lisa
